What are Doc's Guitar Studios? To contact DGS Personal Lessons manager, please click HERE. Thanks for visiting, and welcome to Doc's! Doc's guitar studios offer exceptional guitar lessons, combining an intimate study of both the guitar and piano and how they relate with one another. The goal of Brad Gottlieb, the founder of Doc's is to help people of any age become not only great guitar players, but great musicians as well, instructing them in both the technical side of playing and also a detailed study of the basic fundamentals of music, and how these are both applied in both the playing, and creation of music. Doc's is a modern facility with full digital and analog recording capabilities, MIDI, solid-state and tube amplification, and computer recording. Doc's uniquely offers you the option of bringing a recording of your lesson home with you on CD, to help you practice and develop until your next session! Owner/Instructor Brad Gottlieb ['Doc'] has over twenty years of experience in music study, beginning classical piano training at age six, studying for ten years with the legendary John Moss (himself a student of Arthur Schnabel and Frank Mannheimer). Self-taught on both the guitar and the bass, Brad Gottlieb offers lessons from both a musical and technical approach. Where most facilities that offer guitar lessons simply teach you 'how to play this song and that song', Brad teaches the fundamentals of music, rhythm and style in addition to 'how' to play. Students will learn how the guitar relates to the piano, and vice versa. Studying at Doc's offers much more than studying anywhere else, as the student will come to understand music as a whole, developing the skills of 'how to learn' rather than simply 'how to play'. Extremely competitive pricing, keen personal attention and focus on individual development help to make Doc's the foremost guitar/music instruction entity available. Lessons are given on-site in our studio (North of St. Paul about 10 Minutes), with in-home lessons available as well. Music composition is an additional skill encouraged at Doc's and is offered to any student who wants to write and record their own music. The student is assisted with writing and recording their own song[s] and can create their own songs on CD for their own listening, or to share with family and friends. Doc's Guitar Studios has all necessary equipment to do this in house and is an available option to all students. Music skills have become a rarity in modern times, with most 'musicians' being simply one who knows 'how' to play an instrument. Developing a solid foundation in music theory and structure in addition to advancing technical skill on an instrument is essential to becoming a true musician, this is what you will get, studying at DGS. Doc's Guitar offers a truly unique learning experience that you will not get anywhere else. If you're serious about learning how to play, then you need to call the serious studio- call Doc's today! Finding the right teacher and establishing a great, comfortable relationship with them is extremely important....at Doc's your first session is absolutely FREE. Brad will sit with you and discuss your desires and goals and will answer any questions you may have. Again- this first session is 100% free with no obligation at all....chat with the Doc and let him answer your questions and show you how he teaches and how he will help you master the guitar.
The Philosophy of Doc's Guitar Studios Brad Gottlieb, founder of Doc's, realized that there are a few key things that one must keep in mind when instructing people of any age on how to develop their skills as a musician, and as an instrument player. Here are some of the key points which Brad makes a constant effort to keep in HIS mind when he's teaching others: - Learning to play must be fun. Learning new skills in anything requires discipline, attention and mindfulness. Learning an instrument is no different...however, because learning about music and learning how to play an instrument is so difficult to a beginner, they must be shown immediately how to do something on their instrument that is fun, easy and musical. Many teachers begin teaching guitar by showing the student how to play extremely difficult open chords which can take many months to develop into a fluid and natural motion. Creation of music becomes no easier than it was before ever starting lessons. Brad teaches his students how to do easy, musical things that every student can start doing right away to make music, helping keep them interested and keeping their difficult learning process fun. ___________________________________________________ -Learning to play IS HARD. Go to most places for lessons, and you'll get this: "okay play this [insert extremely difficult thing to play]" This is NOT how one should be taught. This is the equivalent of Tiger Woods hitting a hole-in-one, then turning to you and saying, "okay, now you do it." This type of teacher will do nothing except convince the student that for some reason, they don't possess the talent or necessary skill in order to play, when in reality, the passage that their 'teacher' just played took them five years of playing every day to develop. Brad taught himself to play the guitar and remembers clearly how hard it was just to play a few, simple notes. Keeping this in mind is the duty of any good teacher, and is constantly on Brad's mind. __________________________________________________________________ - Teaching must be Well-Rounded One can go anywhere to learn to play a song, but to become a true musician, a student must learn the fundamentals of music. Learning to read sheet music is an extremely rare trait in a guitar player....this skill is fervently taught at docs. Learning the notes of the piano and the relationship of the piano to the guitar is critical to an intimate understanding of how music is universal and easily translatable....most 'musicians' don't even know such a relationship exists. All types of music should be covered, from classical, to rock to flamenco (Spanish), to jazz....exploring every new musical street helps everyone eventually find their own musical home. ________________________________________________________________ -To teach, the Teacher must listen to the Student Sure, obviously this works the other way most prominently, but all too often a teacher becomes less of a teacher, and more of a lecturer. This is not how music is taught. Music is, at it's own heart an interactive and joyful experience that cannot simply be 'learned'...it must be experienced. Interaction between an instructor and a student must work two-fold. The student must accept that their instructor is in a position where they are more knowledgeable about what they are teaching than the student is....however, likewise, the teacher must learn from each and every student HOW they as an individual learns best (everyone learns differently) and teach them in that unique way that suits them best. This is yet another unique aspect that one can acquire only at Doc's Guitar. __________________________________________________________________ ANYone can do it! Sure, learning to play may come easily to some, but it comes with much difficulty to most. Some people can learn a language in six months....while for others, it may take YEARS of disciplined study to master it. Music is no different...it is a language in itself...a joyful, wondrous language....and being thus, it requires dedication, work, discipline and desire to master this language. Anyone and everyone can learn to make music....it may be a struggle for some [most], or it may come more easily, but with enough desire and effort, anyone can learn the beautiful language of music- a language that needs no interpreters or translators....a language that speaks to ALL people, and is interpreted uniquely by everyone. Come to Doc's and learn to speak with your soul, through music! ________________________________________________
"Music is a rare gift that I have been given by my parents and my teachers...it has brought me more amazement that I can express, more frustration than I'd care to admit, and more joy that I could ever explain. It is my goal in life to share this wondrous gift with others...to share what has given me SO much...to open doors into this new world for anyone and everyone who wants to go with me on this amazing adventure called music." ~Bradley D. Gottlieb
